With offices in Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, Hogan & Hartson has a long tradition of representing corporations and governments operating in the Far East, as well as U.S. companies conducting business throughout the region.
An important component of the firm’s technology law practice is the representation of companies in complex patent matters. Hogan & Hartson lawyers represent many Japanese companies on patent and intellectual property matters, including patent and intellectual property litigation, licensing negotiations, general litigation, opinions regarding infringement and validity issues, the prosecution of patent and trademark applications, due diligence, and patent portfolio analyses. Lawyers also represent clients in all aspects of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) practice. The Tokyo office has four registered U.S. patent lawyers and litigators, who handle patent matters for a wide variety of technologies, including biology, biotechnology, business models, chemistry, computers, electronics, material science, mechanics, semiconductors, and software, as well as antidumping and international trade issues.
The Tokyo office provides Japanese companies with the opportunity to easily meet with firm lawyers in person to discuss and successfully resolve complex legal issues. This on site capability also helps our clients reduce costs. The Tokyo office conducts numerous seminars and has established an On the Job Training (OJT) Seminar Program, offering our clients hands-on experience in successfully handling U.S. legal issues, including patent litigation strategies, negotiation strategies, opinion strategies, and patent prosecution strategies.
The Tokyo office has a particular focus on litigation. Hogan & Hartson lawyers have represented many Japanese companies in litigation throughout the United States, before juries at the district court level, and at the International Trade Commission, as well as at the Federal Circuit and before the Supreme Court. The lawyers and professional legal staff in the Tokyo office play an active role in representing Japanese companies in litigation, enabling our clients to efficiently handle the complex United States discovery obligations.
